For batteries of the sizes AAA, AA, C, D, and 9 volt, there are two popular types of rechargeable batteries that are fairly long lived, Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd, sometimes pronounced Ni-Cad), and Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH). There is a third type, reusable alkaline, which is not addressed in this page because reusable alkaline batteries are capable of a significantly fewer charge/discharge cycles.
